What Does the LORD Require?
The worshiper asks how to approach “the high God” and escalates the proposed gift: burnt offerings, year-old calves, thousands of rams, rivers of oil, finally even a firstborn child. The sequence is intentionally extreme. It exposes the idea that enough religious payment could purchase God’s favor while the life of the worshiper remains unchanged.
Micah’s answer is famous because it is simple without being shallow: do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God. “Justice” is not merely private fairness; it is right judgment and action within covenant community. “Mercy” translates the rich Hebrew word hesed—steadfast covenant loyalty, loyal love, kindness, and faithfulness. Humble walking describes an ongoing life before God rather than a single dramatic act.
