Death Contaminates; Ashes and Living Water Restore Ritual Cleanness
Contact with a corpse, bone, grave, or death inside a tent produces ritual impurity for seven days. Ashes from the red heifer are mixed with “living” or fresh water and sprinkled on the third and seventh days. Hebrews later names “the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean” when contrasting ritual purification with Christ’s deeper cleansing.
Explicit Christological interpretation: Hebrews 9:13–14 names the ashes of a heifer and argues from that ritual cleansing to the far greater cleansing of the conscience by Christ’s blood. This is the secure Jesus connection in Numbers 19.
