Who Became a Neighbor? Torah and the Merciful Samaritan
A lawyer asks what he must do to inherit eternal life and correctly summarizes Torah with love of God and neighbor. The attempt to limit “neighbor” produces Jesus’ story of a wounded traveler, religious passersby, and a Samaritan whose costly mercy makes him the true neighbor.
Where this fits in the story: Leviticus commands neighbor-love, Deuteronomy calls for wholehearted love of God, and Israel-Samaritan hostility gives the parable its social sting. Jesus answers the lawyer’s boundary question by turning attention from “Who qualifies?” to “Who acted with mercy?”
