The Call to Love and Obedience
Deuteronomy 6:1–9 is the movement “The Call to Love and Obedience.” Read it inside Moses’ final covenant instruction to Israel on the eastern side of the Jordan as the people prepare for life in the land. The section opens with: “Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it:” It closes with: “And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.”
Within the book’s larger story, this section advances several important biblical threads. Love of God and Neighbor: The Shema joins confession of the one LORD to wholehearted love and daily covenant teaching. The Divine Name and Character: “The LORD our God is one LORD” becomes a central biblical confession of God’s identity.
