James and John’s desire to call fire from heaven unmistakably recalls Elijah. Later manuscripts make the allusion explicit with ‘as Elijah did,’ but early witnesses omit those words; the narrative echo remains even in the shorter text.

Jesus ‘sets his face’ toward Jerusalem and Isaiah’s Servant sets his face like flint amid suffering. The thematic resonance is strong, but the wording is not a formal quotation and should be presented as probable Servant-pattern resonance.

This is a strong Elijah-Elisha mirroring/contrast: Elisha asks to farewell his family while associated with the plow; Luke gives a would-be disciple the same farewell/plow setting, but Jesus’ summons is more urgent and uncompromising.

Just one chapter after a Samaritan village rejects Jesus and James/John want fiery judgment, Jesus tells a story in which the Samaritan becomes the unexpected model of mercy. The placement destabilizes simple ethnic hostility.

Older biblical texts preserve roots of later Judean/Samaritan conflict, though first-century Samaritan identity cannot be reduced to those texts alone. A careful reading can use as long-range background, not as a direct explanation of every Samaritan action.

Jesus says he 'must' continue toward Jerusalem. Luke's dei language repeatedly marks the passion and resurrection as belonging to God's scriptural purpose rather than accidental defeat.

Luke 9 replays an Elijah-shaped fire-from-heaven judgment pattern when James and John want to call down fire on a Samaritan village, and Jesus redirects them away from that response. Some manuscripts add “as Elijah did,” but the core echo does not depend on the disputed expansion; the narrative itself supplies the pattern and contrast.
