Judgment through Defeat
2 Chronicles 28:5–15 forms the movement “Judgment through Defeat.” Because of Ahaz’s unfaithfulness, the Lord handed him over to the king of Aram, who defeated him and took many people captive to Damascus. Israel also inflicted heavy losses, killing 120,000 men in one day and taking 200,000 women and children captive. But the prophet Oded confronted Israel’s army, declaring that their rage had reached heaven. He warned them to release their captives, for they themselves were guilty before the Lord. Moved by his words, some of the leaders of Ephraim clothed, fed, and returned the captives to Jericho. This act of mercy highlights God’s compassion even in judgment.
