Circumcision — Covenant Sign in the Flesh and the New Testament Debate over the Sign
Genesis 17:9–14 establishes circumcision as the sign of the covenant in Abraham’s male household. The command includes descendants and household members and is given with serious covenant consequences for refusal. In Genesis, circumcision therefore functions first as a concrete covenant sign, not as a vague symbol detached from Abraham’s historical family.
Romans 4 provides the most important New Testament interpretation of the sign. Paul points out that Genesis 15 declared Abraham righteous by faith before Genesis 17 gave him circumcision. Circumcision then became “a sign” and “a seal” of the righteousness of the faith he already had. Paul’s chronology is the argument: the sign did not create the righteousness it signified.
