Be Holy: Family, Sabbath, Idolatry, and Sacrifice
Where this fits in the story: The Decalogue/Sinai covenant supplies obvious family, Sabbath, and idolatry roots; Chapter 19 intentionally interweaves ritual and ethical commands rather than separating them.
Where Scripture takes it next: 1 Peter 1:13–16 — Very Strong explicit quotation family. Peter quotes “Be holy, for I am holy,” drawing from Leviticus 11/19/20 holiness formulas.
First Peter explicitly quotes the Levitical formula “Be ye holy; for I am holy” and applies it to Christian conduct. Leviticus 19:2 is one of the clearest source texts, while similar wording also occurs in Leviticus 11 and 20. The connection is direct and strong, but source precision should acknowledge that Peter may be drawing on the recurring holiness formula rather than one verse alone.
'Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect' resembles the Torah pattern of God's people imitating God's holiness. The exact lexical link is not direct, but the divine-character ethic is strongly comparable.
Leviticus calls God’s people to holiness because YHWH is holy; 1 Thessalonians names sanctification and holiness as God’s will for the church, especially in sexual conduct and treatment of others. The later exhortation develops the same moral trajectory in a Christ-centered community.
