This Is the Will of God: Your Sanctification
Paul states God’s will plainly: sanctification. He applies it to sexual conduct, honor, self-control, justice toward others, and a calling away from uncleanness into holiness. The warning ends by saying that rejecting this instruction is not merely rejecting a human teacher but God, who gives his Holy Spirit.
Where the Old Testament is revealed in the New: Israel’s Scriptures supply more than the general command to be holy. Psalm 79:6 speaks of “the heathen that have not known thee,” closely paralleling Paul’s warning not to live like “the Gentiles which know not God” (4:5). Deuteronomy 32:35 reserves vengeance and recompense to the LORD; Paul warns in 4:6 that “the Lord is the avenger” of exploitative wrongdoing. Neither is presented as a formal quotation, but together they show Paul applying Israel’s holiness, knowledge-of-God, and divine-judgment categories to Gentile believers in Christ.
