Love Your Enemies and Reflect the Father's Character
Matthew 5 does not present Jesus as throwing away the Old Testament. He says the opposite: he has not come to abolish the Law and the Prophets but to fulfill them. Then he takes familiar commands about murder, adultery, truthfulness, justice, and neighbor-love and drives kingdom righteousness into the heart, relationships, speech, retaliation, and even love of enemies.
Where this fits in the story: Torah commands love of neighbor and even concrete aid to an enemy’s animal; Proverbs tells the hearer to feed a hungry enemy. Jesus gathers and radicalizes that trajectory around the Father’s character.
Where Scripture takes it next: the passion narrative will put enemy-love under pressure, while apostolic teaching continues the nonvengeance and enemy-care ethic.
Evidence boundary: “be ye therefore perfect” translates teleios, a word that can carry senses such as complete, mature, or whole. The verse should be read in its immediate love-of-enemies context before being turned into an abstract claim of sinless perfection.
Torah already commands concrete good toward enemies, such as helping an enemy’s burdened animal, while Jesus commands active love and prayer for persecutors. Matthew therefore deepens a biblical ethic that already refused to let hostility cancel neighborly responsibility.
Jesus quotes “Thou shalt love thy neighbour” from Leviticus 19:18 in Matthew 5 and then contrasts it with the saying “hate thine enemy.” Leviticus does not command hatred of enemies; in fact its context forbids vengeance and grudges. The direct Torah quotation is certain, while the attached “hate your enemy” phrase should not be misattributed to the Mosaic law.
Torah and wisdom already command concrete good toward enemies. Jesus universalizes and deepens the ethic into active love and prayer for persecutors.
'Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect' resembles the Torah pattern of God's people imitating God's holiness. The exact lexical link is not direct, but the divine-character ethic is strongly comparable.
