The Flood and the Coming Judgment
The scoffers’ claim that everything simply continues is answered by two acts of God: creation by the divine word and the Flood by water. Peter’s point is theological before it is scientific. The world exists because God spoke, and the same God has acted in judgment within history. The ancient world “perished” under the Flood, while the present heavens and earth are kept by that same word for a future judgment associated with fire. The Flood therefore becomes more than an old catastrophe story; Peter interprets it as a canonical pattern that makes future judgment intelligible. This passage is one of 2 Peter’s strongest Genesis-to-eschatology bridges: creation, de-creation by water, present preservation, and coming judgment are placed on one timeline governed by God’s word.
