The Waters Prevail — De-Creation, Judgment, and the Promise Beyond the Flood
Genesis 7:17–24 is deliberately devastating. The waters rise, the ark is borne above them, the high hills are covered, and every land-dwelling creature with the breath of life outside the ark dies. Noah and those with him alone remain. The story that began with God ordering a world for life now depicts that inhabited order collapsing beneath the waters.
Read beside Genesis 1, the Flood has the shape of de-creation. In creation, God separates waters and brings dry land into view. In the Flood, the fountains of the deep and the windows of heaven open, waters again cover the earth, and dry-land life disappears. Genesis 8 will begin the reversal: God sends a wind over the waters, the waters recede, and dry ground reappears. The sequence is creation → de-creation/judgment → re-creation.
