Israel Joins Baal-peor and YHWH’s Anger Burns
At Shittim, Israel begins sexual relationships with Moabite women, joins their sacrificial meals, and attaches itself to Baal-peor. The danger now is not a curse spoken from a mountain but covenant betrayal inside the camp. Revelation later says Balaam taught Balak to put such a stumbling block before Israel.
Psalm 106 explicitly says Israel joined itself to Baal-peor, ate sacrifices of the dead, provoked YHWH, and was struck by plague, then credits Phinehas’s intervention with stopping it.
