A Call to Obedience and Remembering God’s Works
Deuteronomy 4:1–14 is the movement “A Call to Obedience and Remembering God’s Works.” Read it inside Moses’ final covenant instruction to Israel on the eastern side of the Jordan as the people prepare for life in the land. The section opens with: “Now therefore hearken, O Israel, unto the statutes and unto the judgments, which I teach you, for to do them, that ye may live, and go in and possess the land which the LORD God of your fathers giveth you.” It closes with: “And the LORD commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and judgments, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go over to possess it.”
Within the book’s larger story, this section advances several important biblical threads. Sinai Covenant: Moses turns remembered revelation at Horeb into covenant obedience for the generation entering the land. Truth and Witness: Israel is commanded to remember, teach, and bear witness to what it heard and saw at Horeb.
