Wilderness Rebellions, the Calf, Phinehas, and Meribah
Psalm 106 catalogs wilderness rebellions: craving, envy, the golden calf, refusal of the land, Baal-peor, and Meribah. Verse 20 says Israel exchanged its glory for the image of an ox, language closely paralleled in Romans 1:23 as Paul describes humanity’s idolatrous exchange. That connection is strong but should be distinguished from a formal quotation formula. The section’s repeated pattern shows why covenant mercy is necessary.
