Guard the Deposit
The closing appeal is personal and urgent: “O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust.” The letter has repeatedly described the gospel as an entrusted deposit—truth to be guarded not by hiding it but by teaching it faithfully and embodying it visibly.
Timothy must turn away from profane chatter and “oppositions of science falsely so called.” The KJV’s “science” reflects an older English use of the word for knowledge; the Greek is gnosis, “knowledge.” The verse should not be turned into a biblical attack on modern scientific inquiry, which is not the topic. Nor does the word gnosis by itself prove that the opponents belonged to the fully developed second-century systems modern scholars often label “Gnostic.” The safest conclusion is the text’s own: some people claimed a kind of knowledge that led them away from the faith. The letter ends where faithful ministry must remain—guarding the gospel in grace.
