Guard the Good Deposit by the Holy Ghost
Timothy is told to hold fast the “form of sound words” heard from Paul and to guard “that good thing which was committed unto thee.” The language is that of a valuable deposit entrusted for safekeeping. Christian teaching is not Timothy’s private possession to redesign; it is a trust to preserve in faith and love in Christ Jesus.
Where this fits in the story: the Bible repeatedly presents revelation as something received and handed on faithfully. Deuteronomy commands Israel to remember and teach God’s words; the prophets preserve the word entrusted to them; the apostles pass on the gospel they received. In 2 Timothy 2:2 the same pattern becomes explicitly multigenerational—Timothy is to entrust what he heard to faithful people who can teach others also.
