Rich in Good Works and Rich toward the Coming Age
First Timothy does not tell every wealthy believer simply to become poor. It attacks pride and misplaced trust, then redirects wealth toward God and neighbor. Riches are uncertain; the living God is the true giver. Believers are therefore to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share.
Jesus’ teaching about treasure in heaven stands close behind the logic. Wealth can become a false foundation, or it can be converted into generosity that reflects the coming age. Paul’s “good foundation against the time to come” does not teach that eternal life is purchased with donations; the entire letter has already grounded salvation in God’s mercy and Christ’s ransom. Generosity is the embodied fruit of trusting the Giver rather than the gift.
