Wealth, Instruction, Speech, and the LORD’s Blessing
These sayings acknowledge the real social power of wealth and poverty without confusing money with righteousness. Life is tied to receiving correction, disciplined speech, and righteous labor, while the decisive blessing is the LORD’s rather than merely the result of human accumulation.
Proverbs acknowledges wealth’s social power but grounds true blessing in the LORD; Paul warns the rich not to trust uncertain riches but in God and to become rich in good works.
Proverbs warns that sin multiplies where words multiply and praises restraint; James likewise commands believers to be quick to hear, slow to speak, and to bridle the tongue. The relationship is a strong wisdom correspondence rather than a formal quotation.
Proverbs’ discipline of restrained speech forms part of the wisdom background for James’s warning that teachers face stricter judgment and that the tongue, though small, can direct or damage an entire life.
