The Son of Man Serves and Gives His Life as a Ransom for Many
On the road to Jerusalem Jesus gives his most detailed passion prediction: betrayal to the chief priests and scribes, condemnation, delivery to Gentiles, mockery, scourging, death, and resurrection. James and John respond by asking for the highest places in glory. Jesus speaks of the cup and baptism he must undergo and teaches that greatness in his community means serving rather than ruling like oppressive Gentile authorities. He gives himself as the pattern: the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.
