The Lord Is Patient, but the Day Will Come

Peter changes the scale of the scoffers’ clock by echoing Psalm 90: with the Lord, a day and a thousand years do not function as human measures of divine delay. His point is not a conversion formula for turning prophetic “days” into thousand-year periods. It is a warning against measuring God’s faithfulness by human impatience. What looks like delay is patience aimed at repentance and salvation. Yet patience is not cancellation: the Day of the Lord will come, and Peter joins the wider New Testament image of that day arriving like a thief. The tension matters. God’s longsuffering explains why judgment has not yet come; the certainty of the Day explains why grace must not be mistaken for indifference.
