Be Patient until the Coming of the Lord
After addressing oppressors, James turns to suffering believers: be patient until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for precious fruit and seasonal rains; believers must strengthen their hearts because the Lord’s coming is near. They must not turn suffering inward by grumbling against one another, because the Judge stands at the door.
James then gives biblical exemplars. The prophets suffered while speaking in the Lord’s name, and Job is remembered for endurance and for the Lord’s compassionate outcome. The section closes with a prohibition on oath-making: let yes be yes and no be no.
