Let Your Communication Be Yea or Nay
Matthew 5 does not present Jesus as throwing away the Old Testament. He says the opposite: he has not come to abolish the Law and the Prophets but to fulfill them. Then he takes familiar commands about murder, adultery, truthfulness, justice, and neighbor-love and drives kingdom righteousness into the heart, relationships, speech, retaliation, and even love of enemies.
Jesus gathers Torah’s concern for keeping vows and truthful speech, then commands a kind of integrity that does not need elaborate verbal devices to make truth believable: let yes be yes and no be no. He is attacking manipulative distinctions that allow ordinary speech to become less trustworthy than sworn speech.
Where this fits in the story: Numbers and Deuteronomy insist that vows to the Lord must be kept; Leviticus condemns false swearing.
Where Scripture takes it next: James 5:12 closely echoes the yes/no instruction, showing the saying’s importance in early Christian ethics.
Evidence boundary: Christians have disagreed over whether this prohibits every oath in every setting or condemns deceptive oath-making and casual swearing. The text’s plain-speech ethic is certain; the full application to courts and formal vows is interpretive and should be labeled accordingly.
James’s prohibition of oaths and command “let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay” closely parallels Jesus’ teaching in the Sermon on the Mount.
