The Tongue, Gehenna, and the Image of God
James escalates the warning: the tongue can become a fire, stain the whole body, ignite the “course” or “wheel” of life, and be set on fire by Gehenna. Humanity can tame creatures, yet the tongue remains a restless evil full of deadly poison. The deepest contradiction appears in worship: with the same tongue people bless God and curse human beings made after God’s likeness.
Where this fits in the story: Genesis 1 gives the theological foundation—human beings bear God’s image. James uses that doctrine ethically: contemptuous speech against a person attacks someone who carries divine likeness. Genesis is not left in creation theology; it becomes a reason to refuse cursing.
