Still in His Image — Human Dignity and the Renewed Human Calling
Genesis 9:6–7 answers an enormous post-Fall, post-Flood question: human sin has not erased the image of God. Murder is treated with unique gravity because God made humanity in His image, and the renewed command to be fruitful and multiply immediately follows. Genesis 1 first bestows the image and creation vocation; Genesis 5 repeats image-and-likeness language after the Fall; Genesis 9 now grounds the protection of human life in that same creation status. James 3:9 later uses closely related creation logic when condemning the contradiction of blessing God while cursing people made in God’s likeness. The New Testament also identifies Christ as the perfect image and speaks of believers being renewed according to the Creator’s image, but those developments do not erase Genesis 9’s first point: ordinary fallen human life remains sacred because human beings remain God’s image-bearing creatures. The integrated story is image bestowed → image persists after sin → image grounds human dignity after judgment → redeemed humanity is renewed toward the Creator’s image.
