The Fiery Trial, the Name Christian, and Judgment at God’s House
The fiery trial should not surprise believers as though suffering made God’s promises fail. Peter distinguishes suffering for wrongdoing from suffering “as a Christian” and says reproach for Christ’s name can be a setting in which the Spirit of glory rests upon God’s people. Judgment “begins at the house of God,” and Peter supports the warning with the Greek form of Proverbs 11:31. The logic is not that Christians barely earn salvation; it is that God’s own people are not exempt from his purifying judgment, while the fate of those who reject the gospel is more terrible still. The faithful response is to entrust oneself to the faithful Creator while continuing to do good.
