Tested Faith, Unseen Christ, and the Salvation the Prophets Searched
A careful reading can present grief does not cancel future joy. Peter compares tested faith with gold refined by fire, but says faith is more precious because its goal is praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ. His readers love a Christ they have not seen, and they are already tasting the joy of the salvation toward which faith moves. Peter then widens the horizon: the prophets searched the grace they announced, the Spirit of Christ testified beforehand to Messiah’s sufferings and following glories, the gospel has now announced these things by the Holy Spirit, and even angels desire to look into them. The Christian story is therefore not a new religious detour; it is the unveiling of the salvation toward which earlier Scripture was already moving.
