Strangers and Pilgrims: Honorable Lives before the Nations
Peter now turns identity into public witness. As strangers and pilgrims, believers are to abstain from desires that wage war against the soul and to live honorably among the Gentiles so that accusations may ultimately give way to glorifying God. Submission to human institutions is “for the Lord’s sake,” which keeps political obedience beneath divine allegiance. The compact closing commands are carefully ordered: honor everyone, love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the king. The king receives honor; God alone receives fear. Christian freedom is therefore neither servility nor license—it is freedom lived as God’s servants for the good of others.
