The Prophetic Word and the Spirit-Carried Scriptures
After recalling what he saw and heard, Peter turns readers toward the prophetic word. Scripture is pictured as a lamp shining in darkness until dawn. The imagery moves from present guidance toward the arrival of day and the rising of the morning star. Peter then explains why prophecy deserves attention: it did not originate in human will; people spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Ghost. This does not make the human writers irrelevant, nor does “private interpretation” mean ordinary believers may never read Scripture for themselves. The immediate issue is prophecy’s origin and authoritative meaning: biblical prophecy is not a self-generated human product. The passage joins eyewitness testimony, prophetic Scripture, light-in-darkness imagery, and the Spirit’s activity into one testimony to Christ.
