Rejoice with the Wife of Thy Youth
Instead of merely saying no to adultery, Proverbs gives a positive vision of marital delight. Water imagery emphasizes exclusivity and life-giving joy, and the husband is told to rejoice continually in the wife of his youth rather than seek stolen intimacy elsewhere.
Proverbs tells the husband to rejoice in “the wife of thy youth”; Malachi later condemns marital treachery against “the wife of thy covenant” and likewise calls her “the wife of thy youth.”
Song 2 celebrates lovesickness, embrace, delight, and rightly timed desire; Proverbs 5 explicitly commends sustained erotic delight within marriage.
Song 4 describes the beloved as a sealed spring and fountain in an erotic context; Proverbs 5 uses cistern, fountain, and flowing-water imagery for exclusive marital sexuality.
The fulfilled garden invitation of Song 5:1 and Proverbs 5 both portray sexual delight as something to be enjoyed rather than despised.
Song 7’s openly erotic palm, fruit, fragrance, and wine imagery coheres strongly with Proverbs 5’s explicit commendation of rejoicing in one’s spouse and being ravished with love.
