A Garden Enclosed, a Fountain Sealed
The woman becomes a garden: enclosed, sealed, fruitful, fragrant, and watered. Pomegranates, henna, nard, saffron, calamus, cinnamon, frankincense, myrrh, aloes, a fountain, a well of living water, and streams from Lebanon create one of the richest sensory passages in Scripture.
The immediate erotic meaning is difficult to miss. A protected garden and sealed spring communicate exclusivity and intimacy; the abundance of fruit, spice, and water communicates life and delight. Proverbs 5 uses cistern and fountain imagery for marital sexual faithfulness, making it an especially strong canonical parallel.
