A Star out of Jacob and a Scepter out of Israel
Balaam looks beyond the immediate moment and sees a future ruler: a star comes out of Jacob and a scepter rises from Israel, bringing victory over surrounding enemies. The oracle develops royal expectation already present in Genesis 49. Matthew’s star has long been read against this background, but Matthew never formally quotes Numbers 24.
Messianic trajectory: the Dead Sea Scroll text 4Q175 quotes Numbers 24:15–17 in a future-oriented collection, showing that the star-and-scepter oracle had an eschatological/messianic Jewish reception before Christianity. That strengthens the plausibility of Matthew’s star evoking the oracle, but Matthew still never says “this fulfilled Numbers 24:17.” Revelation 22:16’s “bright and morning star” is a possible later resonance, not a certain quotation.
