Judgment, Jealousy, and the Day of Vengeance
Deuteronomy 32:19–35 is the movement “Judgment, Jealousy, and the Day of Vengeance.” Read it inside Moses’ final covenant instruction to Israel on the eastern side of the Jordan as the people prepare for life in the land. The section opens with: “And when the LORD saw it, he abhorred them, because of the provoking of his sons, and of his daughters.” It closes with: “To me belongeth vengeance, and recompence; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste.”
Scripture also places this passage inside a wider canonical network. Paul directly quotes the Song of Moses about provoking Israel to jealousy by a non-nation/foolish nation. Paul quotes Deuteronomy to forbid personal vengeance and entrust judgment to God. Paul returns to the jealousy motif from Deuteronomy 32:21 as he explains Gentile salvation and Israel’s hoped-for response.
