How Long? Mercy, Forgiveness, and Help for Thy Name
The community asks how long God’s jealousy and anger will burn, then pleads for compassion before strength fails completely. The prayer is strikingly God-centered: “Help us…for the glory of thy name” and forgive “for thy name’s sake.” Deliverance is requested not because the people claim innocence but because God’s character and reputation are at stake.
The gospel’s forgiveness and mercy provide a natural Christian extension, but Psalm 79:9 is already a theology of grace before that extension is made. Revelation 6:10 and 19:2 strongly echo Psalm 79’s “how long?” and vengeance language in the cries and vindication of the martyrs. Those later echoes belong in the connection layer rather than being mistaken for the psalm’s original historical setting.
