Elijah Before the Great Day of the LORD
Malachi ends with expectation. Before the great and dreadful Day of the LORD, God will send Elijah the prophet. His work is described as turning hearts across generations so that the land is not struck with a ban of destruction. The Old Testament closes, in Christian ordering, not with fulfillment but with a promise to watch for a messenger.
Where this fits in the story: Elijah’s ministry in Kings confronted idolatry, called Israel back to covenant loyalty, and ended with his extraordinary departure rather than an ordinary death notice. That made Elijah a natural figure of future restoration hope.
