Elijah Turns Israel’s Heart Back to the LORD
In 1 Kings 18:20–40, the narrative focuses on the contest on mount carmel. This belongs to the Elijah cycle. Drought, provision, restored life, Carmel, rain, flight, Horeb, and prophetic succession reveal the LORD’s authority over life, weather, worship, kings, and prophets while Israel is being called away from Baal and back to covenant loyalty.
Leviticus 9 climaxes with fire from YHWH consuming an accepted sacrifice and the people falling in worship. At Mount Carmel, fire from YHWH again consumes the sacrifice and publicly identifies YHWH as the true God over Baal. The later narrative reuses an established divine-fire-and-accepted-sacrifice pattern without turning Leviticus 9 into a direct prophecy of Elijah.
