The Transfiguration, Moses, Elijah, and the Beloved Son
Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a high mountain and is transfigured before them. His clothes become dazzling, Moses and Elijah appear, and a cloud overshadows the group. A voice from the cloud repeats and develops the baptismal identification: “This is my beloved Son: hear him.” As they descend, Jesus commands silence until the Son of Man has risen and explains that Elijah has come in the pattern Scripture anticipated.
Where this fits in the story: mountain, cloud, radiant glory, Moses, and Elijah bring Sinai and prophetic revelation into view, while the heavenly command places Jesus’ word at the center. The disciples want to preserve the moment, but Mark immediately links glory to resurrection and suffering.
