Rejoice, Daughter of Zion: the LORD Your King Is in Your Midst
The book that opened with creation unraveling ends in song. Daughter Zion is told to sing, shout, rejoice, and be glad because judgment has been removed and the enemy cast out. The reason is not simply better circumstances: “the king of Israel, even the LORD, is in the midst of thee.”
Zephaniah then gives one of Scripture’s most tender pictures of divine restoration. The LORD is the mighty one who saves, yet he also rejoices over his people. The Hebrew text of verse 17 can be understood as God being quiet in his love, while the Greek tradition reflects a reading meaning that he renews his people in love. Either way, the verse is framed by divine delight and singing.
