The King of Israel and Jacob’s Open Heaven
Philip follows Jesus and tells Nathanael that the one written about by Moses and the prophets has been found. Nathanael moves from skepticism to confession: Jesus is Son of God and King of Israel. Jesus then reaches back to Jacob’s dream at Bethel in Genesis 28: heaven opened and angels ascending and descending. John shifts the meeting point between heaven and earth from Jacob’s sacred place to the Son of Man himself. The connection is more than decorative: Jesus is presented as the personal locus of divine presence and access, anticipating the temple claim of John 2.
