The Call and the Flight
Jonah begins with a prophet moving in the opposite direction from God’s command. YHWH sends him eastward to the great Assyrian city of Nineveh; Jonah instead goes down to the Mediterranean port of Joppa and books passage toward Tarshish. The repeated language of going “down” starts a descent pattern that will continue into the ship, the sea, and the depths. Where this fits in the story: Israel was called to bear God’s name among the nations, yet Jonah resists carrying a warning that could become mercy for a hated foreign city. Where Scripture takes it next: 2 Kings 14 identifies Jonah son of Amittai in the reign of Jeroboam II, and Jesus later uses Jonah and Nineveh as a rebuke to a generation that refuses to repent. Evidence boundary: Scripture does not tell us Jonah’s exact date of travel or the exact location of Tarshish.
