From Abraham to David to Exile to Messiah
Matthew’s genealogy is a theological map of Israel’s story: patriarchs, Judah, Davidic kings, catastrophe in Babylon, postexilic survival, and finally the Messiah. It is deliberately shaped rather than a modern exhaustive family register. Matthew even tells the reader to notice the three groups of fourteen. The omissions therefore should not be hidden as “errors”; biblical genealogies can telescope generations, and Matthew is arranging history to emphasize David, exile, and Messiah.
Where this fits in the story: Ruth 4 preserves the Perez-to-David line; Chronicles preserves the Davidic and postexilic genealogy; Kings narrates the exile that Matthew makes a structural hinge. Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and “her that had been the wife of Urias” also force readers to remember complicated stories of sin, danger, outsiders, and providence inside the messianic line.
Where Scripture takes it next: Matthew’s whole Gospel continues the Davidic and Abrahamic claims announced here.
Evidence boundary: the popular explanation that fourteen reflects the Hebrew numerical value of David’s name is plausible and widely defended, but Matthew does not explicitly explain why he chose fourteen. It should be presented as a strong literary proposal, not inspired arithmetic commentary.
