Four Kingdoms and the Kingdom God Establishes
Daniel identifies Nebuchadnezzar as the head of gold and then describes successive kingdoms, ending with a divided iron-and-clay phase. The interpretation culminates not in fascination with empire charts but in a kingdom established by “the God of heaven” that will never be destroyed or transferred to another people.
Tradition test — the four kingdoms: Christian interpretation has long identified the sequence as Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, and Rome. Many modern critical interpreters instead distinguish Media and Persia, making Greece the fourth kingdom. Daniel 8 explicitly names Media-Persia together and Greece after them, which is important evidence in the discussion but does not mechanically settle every feature of Daniel 2 and 7. a responsible reading should present the competing schemes and their arguments instead of treating one chart as if Daniel prints the labels beside every metal.
