Born of God: Faith That Overcomes the World
The final chapter gathers several of the letter’s tests into one movement. Believing that Jesus is the Christ is linked with being born of God; love for the Father includes love for those born of him; love is demonstrated through keeping God’s commandments. John then says God’s commandments are not burdensome because new birth brings a victory that overcomes the world: faith. This “overcoming” vocabulary resonates strongly with the Gospel of John, where Jesus says he has overcome the world, and with Revelation’s repeated promises “to him that overcometh.” The victory is not political domination or worldly success. It is fidelity to Jesus as the Son of God in a world ordered against God. New birth produces a new allegiance, a new family, and a new kind of conquest.
