Walking in Truth Means Walking in Love
The elder rejoices to find some of the lady’s children “walking in truth.” He immediately explains that this walk is inseparable from the command to love one another. As in 1 John 2, the command is described as something heard “from the beginning,” yet it carries the force of Jesus’ command that his disciples love one another. Love is not reduced to emotion: “this is love, that we walk after his commandments.” Second John therefore refuses the modern split between truth and love. Truth without love is not faithful walking, and love that abandons Christ’s command is not the love being described. The short letter compresses the Johannine ethic into a memorable pattern: truth abides, believers walk, love obeys.
