When leaders demand a sign, Jesus points to Jonah: as Jonah was in the sea creature, so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth. He then says Nineveh and the queen of the south will condemn a generation that has received something greater than Jonah and Solomon. The returning-spirit image warns that empty reform without true occupation by God can end worse than before.
Parabolic saying — The returning spirit: the swept and ordered but empty house warns that removal of evil is not the same thing as transformed allegiance. Matthew records Jesus applying the warning to “this wicked generation.” The seven worse spirits intensify the final condition; the passage does not establish a mechanical demon-counting rule.
Who Jesus is — Jesus says that something greater than the temple, Jonah, and Solomon is present. He does not discard those earlier gifts; he places himself as their climactic superior—greater than sanctuary, prophet, and royal wisdom.
