The Great Fish Appointed
The fish is not presented as an independent monster but as another creature under YHWH’s command: God “prepared” or appointed it. Jonah remains inside three days and three nights. Where Scripture takes it next: Jesus explicitly makes this episode a “sign of Jonah” in Matthew 12, comparing Jonah’s three-day confinement with the Son of Man’s three-day burial. That makes the death-to-life trajectory canonically important. Evidence boundary: the Hebrew says a “great fish,” not a biological species, and the passage does not say Jonah was biologically dead inside it.
