Two Ways, False Prophets, and False Profession
Matthew 7 closes the Sermon by turning teaching into decision. Jesus warns against hypocritical judgment but still requires discernment; encourages persistent prayer because the Father is good; summarizes the Law and Prophets with active neighbor-love; and then presents paired outcomes—two roads, two kinds of fruit, two professions, and two foundations.
Jesus closes the Sermon with decisions and tests: two gates, two roads, two kinds of fruit, and finally two kinds of profession. Religious language and even extraordinary works do not substitute for doing the Father’s will and actually belonging to Jesus.
Where this fits in the story: the “two ways” pattern is deeply biblical wisdom—life and death, blessing and curse, righteous and wicked paths. False prophets are likewise a longstanding covenant danger.
Where Scripture takes it next: Matthew repeatedly shows impressive religious claims exposed by their fruit, culminating in the judgment scenes of chapters 23–25.
Evidence boundary: “I never knew you” is relational/judicial language in context; it should not be turned into speculative claims about divine ignorance.
Jesus’ two roads leading to life or destruction belong to Scripture’s wider “two ways” pattern in which Deuteronomy sets life and death, blessing and curse, before God’s people and calls them to choose life.
Two roads leading to life or destruction belong to a deeply rooted biblical 'two ways' tradition of covenant choice and wisdom.
Torah and prophets warn that signs or prophetic claims do not automatically validate a messenger; allegiance, truth, and fruit matter. This is important for Matthew 7:21-23, where charismatic deeds in Jesus' name do not substitute for doing the Father's will.

Jesus’ “depart from me, ye that work iniquity” closely echoes Psalm 6:8, where the psalmist dismisses workers of iniquity. Matthew places that familiar wording on Jesus’ lips as eschatological judge, giving the echo strong Christological force.
The closed-door 'I know you not' language echoes Matthew's earlier warning that verbal profession without faithful relationship/obedience is insufficient.
Jesus’ Two Sons and his earlier warning about saying “Lord, Lord” both distinguish verbal profession from actually doing the Father’s will. Matthew 7:21 and Matthew 21:28–32 both make doing the Father’s will more decisive than correct-sounding words without obedience.
