Do Not Be Anxious: Seek First the Kingdom
Matthew 6 moves kingdom righteousness into motives. Giving, praying, and fasting can be good acts done for the wrong audience. Jesus redirects disciples to the Father who sees in secret, gives them a prayer centered first on God's name and kingdom, warns that wealth can become a rival master, and teaches trust instead of life-consuming worry.
Jesus answers the two-master problem by teaching trust. Life is more than food and clothing; birds and field flowers become witnesses to the Father’s care; anxious striving cannot add control to life. The alternative is not passivity but reordered pursuit: seek first God’s kingdom and righteousness.
Where this fits in the story: Israel’s wilderness experience taught dependence on God for daily provision, and wisdom repeatedly warns against trying to secure life through possessions alone.
Where Scripture takes it next: Matthew’s disciples will later be sent without ordinary travel securities and taught to depend on God’s provision through hospitality.
Evidence boundary: this is not a promise that faithful people never experience hunger, poverty, illness, or suffering. Matthew itself prepares disciples for persecution and material loss.
Jesus explicitly invokes Solomon’s famous glory when teaching against anxiety, saying that even Solomon in all his splendor was not clothed like the lilies God dresses. The reference depends on Kings’ portrait of Solomon’s extraordinary magnificence while subordinating royal glory to the Father’s care in creation.
Matthew’s teaching about birds, lilies, food, and the Father’s care belongs to a broad scriptural creation-and-providence tradition in which creatures depend continually on God’s provision. Psalm 104 is a major background text for that theology of daily creaturely dependence.
Paul’s command not to be consumed by anxiety and to turn to God parallels Jesus’ teaching not to be anxious for life’s needs but to seek the kingdom and trust the Father.
Jesus tells disciples to store treasure in heaven rather than on earth; 1 Timothy tells the rich to become rich in good works and thereby lay up a good foundation for the future. Both relocate security from possessions to faithful life before God.
Matthew 6 warns against serving Mammon and anxiously pursuing food, drink, and clothing; 1 Timothy 6 joins godliness with contentment and warns that the determination to be rich produces spiritual danger. Both expose wealth as a false source of security.
