The Bronze Serpent: Look and Live
Israel again speaks against God and Moses, fiery serpents strike the camp, and the people confess. YHWH tells Moses to make a bronze serpent and lift it on a pole; the bitten person who looks lives. Jesus later explicitly says the Son of Man must be lifted up “as Moses lifted up the serpent,” making this one of Numbers’ clearest Christological connections.
Jesus explicitly compares the Son of Man being lifted up with Moses lifting up the serpent in the wilderness, making Numbers 21 a direct Christological connection. Because Jesus himself states the comparison, this is one of Numbers’ clearest inspired Christological interpretations rather than later devotional typology.
2 Kings identifies a bronze serpent made by Moses, reports that Israelites later burned incense to it, and says Hezekiah destroyed it and called it Nehushtan. The later misuse of the object shows how a God-given instrument can become idolatrous when detached from its original purpose.
Paul warns believers not to test Christ/Lord as some Israelites did and were destroyed by serpents; Numbers 21 records Israel speaking against YHWH and the resulting judgment by fiery serpents.
