These Things Happened as Examples and Warnings
Paul explicitly says Israel’s wilderness failures became “examples” for believers. He moves through several episodes: craving evil things, the golden calf, sexual immorality, testing the Lord/Christ, and murmuring that brought judgment. The details reach back especially into Exodus and Numbers.
The purpose is not to mock Israel as uniquely faithless. Paul addresses a largely Gentile church with “our fathers” language and then tells Christians to learn from the same story. “Let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.”
